When you feel sick, you say you are "Under the weather." This is purely nautical! The top floor of a wooden ship is completely exposed to rain, wind, and the violent rocking of the ocean, known as the "Weather Deck." If a sailor caught a fever or was injured, the Captain ordered him to go below the top floor to recover in the stable, dry hold. He was literally sent "Under the Weather."
